Ronald Toito'ona

I am a Journalist from Solomon Islands, working for the Solomon Star Newspaper – the only daily newspaper publisher in the country.

After undergoing Under-graduate studies a Bachelor of Arts, in Journalism and Political Science at the University of South Pacific (USP) in Fiji Islands, I was accepted to work for the newspaper in April 2015. I am currently the assisting Sub-Editor for the Solomon Star newspaper, since July 2018.

As a Journalist, I started to build my interest in reporting on Climate Change, after attending a climate change media training for journalists which was facilitated by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), in June 2016. Since reporting on the issue of Climate Change, I was also had the privilege to attend Climate Change workshops, conferences and have interviewed major players of the government’s Ministry of Environment.

Being selected as a Climate Change Media Partnership (CCMP) fellow is a wonderful opportunity to explore more and dig deeper into writing in-depth Climate Change stories. Attending the current COP24 will be a boost to my career, and will further enhance my ability to write environmental stories.

I valued reporting on climate change because it is about real stories in real time. Besides, Solomon Islands as a small island nation in the Pacific region has already seen and felt the effects of Climate Change to human lives and the dangers ahead, if nothing is done to address the global deadly subject. Over all, my successful participation in this fellowship program will open more windows of opportunity to report more on environmental issues that are affecting the Solomon Islands, Pacific region and the world.
